Best Robot Dogs and Quadrupeds: Ranked by the Job Each One Does

Three quadrupeds, three different jobs: industrial inspection at scale, research and teaching, and certified hazardous-area work. Ranked, with security posture.

There is no best quadruped in general, and any ranking that pretends otherwise is ranking price. The three machines here sit at wildly different price points and do wildly different jobs. Spot is an inspection product sold with fleet software and a support contract. The Go2 is the quadruped a student or a small lab can actually own. ANYmal X is the only legged robot with a published explosion-protection certificate, aimed at a classified hazardous area and almost nothing else.

So the ranking criterion is job fit: which machine does the thing you are buying it for, at the maturity you need, with a security posture you can live with. That last clause carries real weight here, because the three differ sharply. One ships an unauthenticated programming interface by design and carries an unpatched wormable exploit. One has a clean public register and a company-level audit, with no product-level assessment published at all. One is a US-made enterprise product with no published CVE and a fleet software layer as the actual deliverable. Those are three different risk conversations, and they should happen before the purchase order.

The order reflects breadth of defensible use. Spot ranks first because it is the most mature legged robot you can deploy and it arrives with fleet software and a support contract. The Go2 ranks second because it is the machine most people can actually put hands on. ANYmal X ranks third on evidence, with the caveat that inside its narrow envelope it has no competitor at all.

Boston Dynamics Spot

Best at: producing a repeatable inspection dataset. Spot is a rugged 12-degree-of-freedom quadruped, roughly 840 mm tall and 32.5 kg, carrying about 14 kg of payload at up to 1.6 m/s, sealed to IP54. The payload number is the one that matters: a thermal camera, a gas sniffer, a LiDAR head, an arm. At fleet scale the machine is managed through Orbit, Boston Dynamics' fleet software, covering mission scheduling, autonomous route execution, data capture and the inspection record. With more than 1,500 units deployed, that software is where the operational value and the recurring revenue live. The right way to read the purchase: a system that returns structured inspection data, with the robot as the sensor carrier.

Security posture: the Spot review documents no published CVE. What it does document is a dependency: autonomy and fleet management are the product, delivered as a subscription, which means the vendor relationship is part of your operational security rather than an add-on.

The disqualifying caveat: the money. The price repeated across the internet is the 2020 launch figure for the base robot, and Boston Dynamics moved to quote-only enterprise sales years ago. Configured units in public procurement records run several times that launch figure, driven mainly by payload selection, and an annual five-figure subscription for fleet software, autonomy and enterprise support sits on top. If the business case only closes at the number in the search results, it does not close. Treat the ratios as the durable part: base robot, a multiple once configured, plus a recurring software line.

Second caveat worth naming because it becomes a site-engineering project: about 90 minutes of runtime, less on hard terrain or with a heavy payload. Boston Dynamics' own guidance is hot-swap batteries or docking stations, which means dock placement, network coverage and route planning are part of the purchase.

Unitree Go2

Best at: access. The Go2 is a compact 12-degree-of-freedom quadruped, roughly 76 x 31 x 20 cm crouched and about 15 kg with the battery, and it is the quadruped a student, a small-budget lab or a startup prototyping a gait can own outright. Its advantage over the enterprise machines is that you can have one.

The tier ladder is the whole purchase. Air, Pro, X and EDU: price roughly multiplies by seven from entry to EDU, and those multiples held through the mid-2026 price cuts even as the absolute numbers fell. What the money buys is programmability. Full SDK access with ROS 2 support and a Jetson Orin for onboard compute are EDU features, which is why EDU units end up in robot-learning labs. Below EDU you get the app and the higher-level interfaces. The conversational demos that circulate need an LLM wired in through the SDK, so they need EDU too. Runtime splits the same way: 8,000 mAh and roughly 1 to 2 hours on the consumer tiers, 15,000 mAh and roughly 2 to 4 hours on EDU.

Security posture, the sharpest of the three: two separate problems. First, EDU firmware exposes a programming interface without authentication, so anyone on the same network can reach it and in practice root it. That is unlikely to be fixed in the usual sense, because open programmatic access is the tier's entire value proposition. Treat it as a design property and put EDU units on an isolated VLAN. Second, UniPwn: the Bluetooth Low Energy vulnerability disclosed on 20 September 2025 by Andreas Makris and Kevin Finisterre, covering the Go2 alongside the B2, G1 and H1. Hardcoded cryptographic keys and an authentication bypass give root from within wireless range, and the exploit is wormable between nearby Unitree robots. As of May 2026 researchers reported no patch and the same authentication architecture still in production firmware. Neither is a reason to avoid the machine. Both are reasons to segment its network and to think twice about running a fleet in a public venue.

The disqualifying caveat: buying the wrong tier. Buy Pro rather than Air unless you have read exactly what Air gives up, and buy EDU if anyone will write code. And none of the tiers if you need an IP-rated machine for a real industrial environment or payload beyond a few kilograms.

ANYbotics ANYmal X

Best at: the one thing nobody else certifies. ANYmal X is the only four-legged inspection robot with a published explosion-protection certificate, stated on the vendor page as "ATEX & IECEx certified up to Zone 1 IIB" and "Certified for up to Zone 1 where inflammable gases are likely to occur." Read every part of that string as a limit. Zone 1 excludes Zone 0. Gas group IIB excludes IIC, which is hydrogen and acetylene, so hydrogen production, electrolyser plants, compressor houses and IIC-classified hydrotreater areas fall outside it. The certification as published is gas only, with no dust certification (Zone 21 or 22) stated; the page's "dust- and waterproof" language refers to IP67 ingress protection, which is a different thing. The full Ex marking string, temperature class, certifying body and certificate number are unpublished. Ask for the IECEx certificate number and verify it before accepting any suitability claim.

Security posture: clean on the public register and thin underneath. No CVE has been published against ANYbotics or ANYmal, and an NVD keyword query for both terms returns zero results as of August 2026. CVE-2025-41110, frequently misattributed, belongs to Ghost Robotics Vision 60 v0.27.2. A February 2026 preprint survey by Mohammad Sabouri (University of Genoa, arXiv 2602.23404, a preprint rather than a peer-reviewed paper) states that the platform's security posture "remains opaque: no independent security audit has been published, no CVE has been disclosed, and implementation details regarding encryption, authentication, and key management are not publicly documented," and notes that ATEX/IECEx address physical safety rather than cybersecurity. That survey scores ANYmal 7.2 out of 10 on equal weighting with assessment confidence rated "Low." Against it: on 6 February 2026 ANYbotics announced ISO/IEC 27001 certification, passed with zero non-conformities on the first attempt. That is a genuine third-party audit of an information security management system, so it covers process. No product-level security assessment has been published.

The disqualifying caveat: you cannot get a specification sheet. ANYmal X was unveiled on 22 March 2022 and commercial orders opened on 28 September 2022, yet in August 2026 the product page still reads "2026 ANYmal X specifications coming soon." The performance figures that exist (90 to 120 minutes runtime, 3 hours to full charge, 100 minutes to 70 percent, 0.75 m/s walking, up to 10 kg additional payload) are the base ANYmal from the vendor's own page and do not transfer to the X. No list price is published, and no primary-source purchase or lease figure could be verified, so the numbers circulating on aggregator sites are quoted nowhere here.

For US buyers there is now a second caveat. The FCC's 28 July 2026 Covered List update added advanced robotic devices, and the fact sheet states the finding applies "regardless of the nationality of origin," so Switzerland counts as foreign. Previously authorized models keep their authorizations and can still be imported, sold and used; previously purchased devices and federal government purchase and use are unaffected. New models need conditional approval, and IEEE Spectrum reports an application deadline of 1 January 2028. ANYbotics VP of strategy Philipp Frey told IEEE Spectrum the company plans to apply for conditional approval of future products.

How to choose between them

Start with the hazard classification. If you operate a Zone 1 IIB gas area, ANYmal X is the only certified option, and the decision is then about whether you can accept an unpublished specification sheet and, for US sites, the authorization question. If your hazard is hydrogen or acetylene, combustible dust, or Zone 0, none of the three is certified for it.

If there is no classified area, ask who touches the robot. If the answer is engineers writing control code, deploying learned policies or using ROS 2, that is Go2 EDU, plus an isolated VLAN in the same budget line. If the answer is an operations team that wants a repeatable inspection record with a support contract behind it, that is Spot, and the honest cost is the configured quote plus the recurring software line plus the docking infrastructure the 90-minute battery forces.

Then price the site as well as the robot. All three run on the order of one to a few hours, and every one of them turns availability into a docking and charging design problem. In a Zone 1 area that is heavier still: an Ex-rated docking station is a hazardous-area electrical installation project with its own certification cost, and battery swapping inside Zone 1 is normally prohibited by hazardous-area practice.

Finally, put the security posture in writing. For the Go2, network segmentation is mandatory rather than advisable. For ANYmal, ask whether it ships ROS 2 with SROS2 and DDS security enabled, and about encryption, authentication and key management, because none of that is public. For Spot, the questions are about the subscription and what year three looks like.

Verdict

Spot takes first place because it is the most mature legged robot you can deploy and the maturity is the product. Locomotion stopped being the interesting part years ago; you are buying autonomy software, fleet management and an inspection dataset wrapped around a well-sealed 14 kg sensor carrier. Go in knowing the real quote is a multiple of the internet figure, that a recurring five-figure software line sits underneath, and that docking infrastructure is part of the project.

The Go2 takes second because it is the most important quadruped in education and research, for the plain reason that people can buy it. Get the tier right the first time, and treat it as a machine that assumes a friendly network and will not get one.

ANYmal X takes third on published evidence while owning a category of one. Buy it for the certificate, read the certificate carefully, and run a paid pilot with contractual availability targets before committing a fleet.

Which robot dog is best overall? There is no overall winner. Spot is best for industrial inspection at scale, the Go2 for research, teaching and prototyping, and ANYmal X for certified Zone 1 IIB gas areas. Pick by the job.

Which of these is the most secure? None has a documented clean bill of health at product level. ANYmal is not sold on the strength of an open developer ecosystem.

How long do they run on a charge? Spot is about 90 minutes. The base ANYmal is 90 to 120 minutes per the vendor page, with ANYmal X figures unpublished. The Go2 runs roughly 1 to 2 hours on consumer tiers and 2 to 4 hours on EDU. Terrain, payload and cold reduce all of them.

Can any of them work in an explosive atmosphere? Only ANYmal X, and only up to Zone 1 IIB, gas. The claim that Spot operates in Zone 1 or 2 via an explosion-proof accessory package could not be corroborated in any certification record.

Does the FCC Covered List update affect what I can buy? It bars new FCC equipment authorizations for covered foreign-produced robots, which gates import, marketing and sale of new models. Boston Dynamics is a US manufacturer and out of scope; ANYmal and the Go2 are foreign-produced and in scope. Previously authorized models, previously purchased devices and federal government purchase and use are unaffected.

Why can I not find prices for two of these? Spot is quote-only enterprise, and the figure repeated online is the 2020 launch price for the base robot. ANYbotics publishes no list price, and no primary-source purchase or lease figure could be verified, so the numbers on aggregator sites should be treated as unsourced.
