Roborock Saros 20 Review: Strong Cleaning, a Bounded Support Horizon
The Saros 20 cleans very well. The FCC's July 2026 Covered List addition and Roborock's own support policy both bound how long it stays patchable.
Roborock's current flagship line has three shipping members and one demo. The Saros 20 is the mainline model, unveiled at CES 2026 and launched in North America on 22 March 2026. The Saros 20 Sonic is its sonic-mop sibling. The Saros Z70 is the OmniGrip robotic-arm model from April 2025, still sold and heavily discounted. The Saros Rover, the wheel-leg machine Roborock showed at CES 2026, has no announced price and no announced ship date, and belongs in the marketing pile until one of those exists.
Two dates matter more than any spec on the box. On 28 July 2026 the FCC's Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau added foreign-produced advanced robotic devices to the Covered List, and the definition reaches robot vacuums. On the same day the FCC's Office of Engineering and Technology issued a limited waiver permitting qualifying Class I and Class II software and firmware updates to previously authorised covered devices through at least 1 January 2029. Alongside that, Roborock's own Software Security Support Policy promises security updates "for a minimum of 2 years" and lists the Roborock app as supported to 31 December 2026.
None of that appears on the US product page, which advertises 36,000 Pa, a one-year limited warranty and remote video viewing. The cleaning is genuinely good. The disclosure is the problem.

The regulatory clock
The addition rests on the Secure and Trusted Communications Networks Act of 2019, which requires the FCC to maintain a list of equipment posing an unacceptable national security risk, and which bars the Commission from adding equipment on its own initiative. The trigger here was a National Security Determination from an Executive Branch interagency body.
The definition is element-specific and broad. An advanced robotic device is a ground-mobile machine capable of locomotion, obstacle avoidance, navigation or other movement on the ground, operating at a distance from a human operator, whose combined weight with its ground station or docking station exceeds 4.4 pounds, and which contains an environmental sensor, a network-connectivity component with connection speeds of at least 200 kilobits per second in either direction, and software (including firmware and AI or machine-learning model weights) controlling navigation, perception, data collection or remote command and control. Connected vehicles, rail vehicles, uncrewed aircraft, unmanned underwater vehicles, certain medical devices and fixed industrial robots are excluded. Robot vacuums, robot mowers and pool robots are not excluded.
"Foreign-produced" is defined against the Buy American domestic end product test in 48 CFR 25.101(a). For most manufactured products the current test requires US manufacture and domestic component costs exceeding 65% of total component cost for items delivered in calendar years 2024 through 2028. Manufacturer nationality is not determinative: a product made outside the US by a US company can be foreign-produced.
The practical effect is on new models. Under the FCC's rules, equipment on the Covered List cannot receive an equipment authorisation, so a new foreign-produced advanced robotic device generally cannot be imported, marketed or sold in the US unless it receives Conditional Approval. Advanced robotic device producers seek that approval from the Department of War, and applications are due by 1 January 2028. The application requires corporate ownership, bill-of-materials, supply-chain, software and firmware information, and a time-bound US manufacturing plan.
Existing owners are the part everyone gets wrong. Per the FCC fact sheet quoted by CNET, "This action does not affect any previously purchased devices." Roborock told CNET it does not expect a short-term impact on its robot lineup and that products bought through US sales channels meet certification criteria. It declined to comment when WIRED asked on 30 July.
Unverified, and it matters: I could not confirm the FCC ID authorisation dates for the Saros 20, 20 Sonic or Z70. Given their launch dates they almost certainly predate 28 July 2026, but read the FCC ID on the label before you rely on it. I also could not confirm whether the 1 January 2029 waiver date will be extended. The FCC's language is "through at least" that date, which is a floor on relief rather than a hard ceiling on patching.
What the bench says versus what the box says
Vacuum Wars' Saros 20 review, last updated 20 August 2026, is the most complete independent test set available. Vacuum Wars states it buys the units it tests and does not take sponsorship.

Read that table properly. The cleaning results are strong: 89% on embedded sand, 88% on flattened pet hair, zero hair wrap, and a mopping score well above average achieved with less excess water than average. Those are the metrics that decide whether your floors are clean.
Airflow, bench suction, bin size and coverage all sit at or below average. The marketed 36,000 Pa is roughly 88 times the 0.41 kPa Vacuum Wars measured on its bench, which tells you the two numbers are measuring different things at different points. Vacuum Wars notes that real-world pickup did not appear to suffer. The listing does not explain the gap.
Threshold climbing over-delivers. Roborock claims a two-tier total of 88 mm via AdaptiLift 3.0, a 45 mm first tier and a 43 mm second tier. Vacuum Wars crossed a 57 mm single step, which it records as a new single-step record ahead of the MOVA Z60 and Dreame X60, and notes it took some repositioning.
The Z70 arm
TechRadar's review of the Saros Z70 is headlined "this robot vacuum has an arm, but it's not all that handy yet." That is the state of the feature.
Pricing tells the rest. The Z70 launched at $2,599 in April 2025. On 24 August 2026 the Roborock US store listed it at $999.99 against a $2,599.99 list price, during a company anniversary sale. That is a 62% discount and roughly $1,600 off list, about sixteen months after launch.
I have removed the specific manipulation claims that were in the first draft of this section (a recognised-object count, a per-item mass limit and a success rate). I could not verify any of them against a primary source or an accessible review body, so they are gone rather than hedged. If you are considering the Z70 for its arm, read a hands-on review that names the objects it tested.
Privacy, the camera and where the data sits
The Saros 20's RGB camera is part of the navigation system, alongside 3D time-of-flight sensors, so it is not an accessory you can decline. The app also supports remote viewing and video calling through that camera. The robot supports Matter and third-party voice assistants.
Roborock's website privacy policy, effective 2 July 2025, states: "We store the personal information collected in data centers in China, Germany and the United States." It also states that where processing is based on "the public interest, scientific, historical research, or statistical purposes," Roborock may continue to retain the data even if further processing is unrelated to the original collection purpose. Roborock's Trust Center says it operates independent data centres across Asia, Europe and North America and that user data is stored based on registered region.
On disclosures: Roborock's published security advisory, dated 15 September 2021, concerns an insecure random number generator in the Tuya IoT cloud device-side library used when negotiating the communication channel. It affects the S6, S5 Max, S6 Pure, S6 MaxV and S4, and was resolved by OTA firmware updates that the advisory lists by version. The advisory says the issue undermined the security of device info, cleaning data, maps, robot settings and customization options in transit. No CVE is cited in it. A keyword search of the NIST National Vulnerability Database for "roborock" returns zero records. Treat that as an absence of published research rather than a clean bill of health.
A blog claim in circulation that Check Point researchers earned a $30,000 bounty for hijacking Roborock vacuums does not verify. The same posts describe Xiaomi as "Roborock's parent company," which is wrong: Roborock is separately listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange under 688169. Do not repeat either.
What it actually costs to own
Read on the Roborock US store on 24 August 2026: the Saros 20 lists at $1,599.99, the Saros 20 Sonic at $1,699.99, and the Saros Z70 at $999.99 against a $2,599.99 list. Vacuum Wars records the same $1,599.99 for the Saros 20 on the same date.
Credit where it is due: I found no subscription and no paywalled cleaning feature on any of the three US product listings. That is increasingly rare in this category.
The US store states a one-year limited warranty with a paid extended warranty option, free returns or replacement within 30 days of delivery, and 30-day price protection. The Z70's two-year extended warranty is listed at $235.
The first draft of this section carried consumables cost ranges, detergent dilution figures, right-to-repair characterisations and several quarters of Roborock financial results. None of it survived verification against a primary source, so all of it is deleted. This section is thinner than a cost-of-ownership section should be, and that is the honest state of what I could confirm.
How it compares
The comparison that is actually verifiable right now is how the vendors answered the FCC action, not a spec grid.

Because the covered definition turns on place of production rather than brand nationality, most of this category is inside the same boundary. Comparative claims about competitors' security findings and market shares that appeared in the first draft are deleted: I could not verify them.
Who should buy it
Buy it if you want the cleaning result and you are comfortable with a camera-equipped connected robot whose published security-update floor is two years from launch. The carpet and mopping numbers are near the top of the category, hair wrap is zero, and I found no subscription. Buying from existing US stock is legal and stays legal.
Skip it if you want a device you expect to be patching late in the decade, or a camera in a bedroom or a child's room is a line you do not cross.
Wait if you want to see how the Conditional Approval process plays out before committing to a brand whose future US models depend on it.
Verdict
The Saros 20 is a very good cleaner sold with a disclosure gap. It beats category average on the metrics that determine whether your floors are clean, and I found no subscription for features competitors are starting to meter. Against that, the 36,000 Pa headline is about 88 times the bench suction figure with no explanation on the listing, measured obstacle avoidance is 17 of 24 against a marketed 300 recognised object types, and the support horizon is bounded at the low end by a published two-year floor while the federal update waiver runs through at least 1 January 2029. The product page mentions none of it.
Buy it as a multi-year appliance and it is a strong purchase. Buy it as a long-lived connected camera and you are relying on policy that has not been written yet.
Frequently asked questions
Is it still legal to buy a Roborock in the US? Yes. The FCC states that previously authorised models may continue to be imported, marketed, sold and used, and its fact sheet says the action "does not affect any previously purchased devices." What is blocked is new equipment authorisation for foreign-produced covered devices without Conditional Approval.
Will my Saros 20 stop receiving updates? Roborock's policy promises "a minimum of 2 years" of software security updates from launch and says the support period will not be shortened. Can I disable the camera? Not as a sensor. The RGB camera is part of the StarSight navigation system. Roborock's app also offers remote viewing and video calling through it, which is a separate feature from navigation.
Where is my data stored? Roborock's website privacy policy, effective 2 July 2025, names data centres in China, Germany and the United States. Its Trust Center says data is stored according to your registered region.
Is the Z70 arm worth the extra money? TechRadar's verdict is that the arm "is not all that handy yet." The Z70 was listed at $999.99 on Roborock's US store on 24 August 2026 against a $2,599.99 list price, so the arm currently costs less than the mainline Saros 20.
Is the Saros Rover buyable? No. Roborock announced it at CES 2026 as a wheel-leg robotic vacuum. There is no announced price and no announced ship date.
