Skydio X10 Review: The Failure Rate Skydio Publishes Where Nobody Looks
Skydio's own support portal carries an open flight-control failure with a published per-flight rate. The marketing page does not mention it.
Skydio publishes a number about the X10 that appears nowhere on skydio.com. In a Notice to Operators dated 23 May 2025 (OSB number SOSB-24-V19), the company says it identified an issue occurring "approximately 1 in 55,600 flights" that may cause the X10 and X10D onboard flight control system to become unresponsive. The bulletin describes the flight control system stopping data processing in flight, "resulting in an unrecoverable loss of power to the motors," with a potential crash causing serious injury or damage. It says the root cause "is still under investigation" and that there are "currently no known precursor indications available to pilots" to detect it beforehand.
That bulletin lives on support.skydio.com, which returns HTTP 403 to ordinary web fetchers. It is reachable through the Zendesk help-center JSON API, which is how the record behind this review was assembled. Technically public, practically invisible. Meanwhile the National Vulnerability Database returns zero results for the keyword "Skydio" across every year, so there is no CVE trail either. The safety notices are the disclosure surface.
This review is about that gap. The X10 is a capable, NDAA-compliant, Blue UAS Cleared aircraft with a real public-safety installed base. It also carries an open crash mode with a vendor-published rate, two more published per-flight fault rates, and a hardware remediation that runs into late 2026. All of that is verifiable. None of it is on the product page.

The safety-notice record
Skydio's support portal carries a run of Notices to Operators naming the X10 or X10D. The pattern matters more than any single entry. Between March 2024 and April 2026 the list covers flight in precipitation, delayed motor spin-up, drift while hovering, overheating alerts, damaged motor stator alerts, accelerated propeller hub wear, unsupported attachment errors, two separate power-loss modes, GPS-related erratic behaviour on the X10D, third-party radio interference with the controller, a battery level estimation error, and a firmware update that Skydio said "we expect this error to occur during approximately 6% of update attempts."
Four deserve individual attention.
Flight control system failure (SOSB-24-V19, 23 May 2025). The lead finding above. Skydio says it will replace vehicles damaged by this issue, which is an implicit acknowledgement that losses continue. The 23 April 2026 revision points to a software update carrying "multiple flight safety and reliability improvements that are expected to reduce the likelihood of inflight disruptions and emergency landings," and says Skydio continues investigating root cause. Eleven months after publication, still open.
Power loss from battery reset (SOSB-24-V17, 31 January 2025). A separate mode, and the one place Skydio put its own rate in context. The bulletin says the fault occurs in "extremely rare cases (approximately 1 in 20,000 flights)," that "an operator flying 3 flights per day could expect to see the issue occur once every 20 years," and that Skydio estimates "this fault is roughly twice as likely to cause a crash as a bird strike, based on fleet-wide data." Root cause was found (a communication issue in the battery management unit) and mitigated by a fleet-wide software update on 19 February 2025 that blocks flight on un-updated batteries. This is what a closed bulletin looks like, and it is the contrast that makes SOSB-24-V19 read badly.
Parachute deployment (SOSB-26-V02, 24 April 2026). Operators were told to "Cease all use of the Orbit Skill or an orbit maneuver while the Parachute attachment is installed and armed," because the parachute's internal position estimate accumulates error during longer or tighter orbits and incorrectly detects an excessive bank angle. The sting is the next instruction: "In circumstances where the Parachute has been removed or disabled, cease flight operations over people." For a DFR programme flying urban calls, that guidance suspends the core mission. Fixed in X10 drone firmware Cayley 43.147.79 on 12 May 2026.
Blackout Mode crash (SOSB-26-V1, 13 April 2026). On the X10D Connect MH and X10D Connect SL, the defence variants, enabling Blackout Mode in flight "may cause the aircraft to initiate an uncommanded emergency landing or lose controlled flight and crash." The bulletin explains that the transition briefly interrupts onboard processing, after which the aircraft may incorrectly detect a critical onboard system as unavailable. Blackout Mode is the emissions-silence feature a defence operator engages at the moment of contact. Resolved in v43.147.74 on 23 April 2026, ten days later. That is a fast turn on a feature that failed exactly where it is needed.
Add a hardware tail. A crash on the evening of 12 May 2025, from an X10 Dock Beta deployment, involved the battery being ejected and catching fire, and was traced to battery connector wear. Skydio announced a physical shim on 27 July 2026, pre-installed on new vehicles with self-installation kits for existing customers, and says distribution "will be completed by the end of September 2026." That is a remediation window of roughly sixteen months from the incident.
What the dock actually costs
Skydio does not publish X10 or Dock for X10 pricing on its website, and the reseller and government price lists that circulate are undated PDFs. This review originally carried a set of dock-to-drone ratios read from one of those files. None of it could be traced to a dated, attributable source, so it has been removed rather than repeated.
What can be said without a price sheet: the dock, the deployment and training engagement, the annual dock maintenance, and the DFR and Remote Ops software subscriptions are separate line items from the aircraft, and a docked DFR site is a materially larger commitment than the drone kit alone. If you are pricing a programme, get a written quote covering all of those lines for year one before you model anything. Do not price off a drone SKU, and do not trust a ratio you read on a blog, including the ones this review used to print.
Marketed performance versus what the vendor admits
The advertised figures, from Skydio's X10 product page: 40 minutes maximum flight time, maximum horizontal speed 45 mph, maximum gust handling 28.6 mph (43 km/h), service ceiling 15,000 ft (4.57 km), under 4.7 lb, maximum payload capacity 385 g, IP55, and an operating range of minus 20C to plus 45C. Deployment time is given as under 40 seconds. Thermal is a Teledyne FLIR Boson+ at 640x512 px and under 30 mK sensitivity.
Sensor packages differ, and the specs travel with the package rather than with the airframe. VT300-Z carries a 64 MP narrow (46mm) and a 48 MP telephoto (190mm) plus thermal. VT300-L carries the 64 MP narrow plus a 50 MP wide (20mm, 1-inch sensor) plus thermal. V100-L is the same optics without thermal. Six 32 MP navigation cameras give the 360 degree visual field on all of them.
On radio, Skydio quotes Connect SL at up to 7.5 miles (about 12 km), and Connect Fusion as unlimited within cellular coverage. Link encryption is AES-256.
I could not find credible independent measurement of endurance, positional accuracy or fleet uptime. For a platform with this installed base, that absence is itself notable. The commonly repeated "real-world 28 to 35 minutes" range traces to aggregator sites with no test methodology and should not be cited. A claim that top speed drops from 45 mph to 36 mph with obstacle avoidance active circulates widely and does not appear on the vendor spec page. Treat it as unverified.
Two vendor-confirmed degradations are more damaging than any runtime shortfall.
Battery percentage was wrong. A Notice to Operators dated 13 October 2025 states the state-of-charge estimate erred in "approximately 1 in 300 flights that reach less than 30% charge" and in "about 1 in 1500 flights overall," across all X10 and X10D flight systems, with symptoms including rapid percentage drops in flight. The displayed endurance was algorithmically incorrect. The mitigation shipped in the 12 November 2025 software update, with the X10D MH international builds following on 8 December 2025.
Propellers needed a redesign. REV 1 propellers used aerospace-grade aluminium and stainless steel at the hub, which Skydio says "contributed significantly to accelerated prop hub wear." REV 2 moved to a low-friction plastic and added a stabilising hoop to reduce strain on the quick-release attachment point. New X10 kits have shipped with REV 2 since April 2025, and from 8 July 2025 Skydio began sending two sets of REV 2 propellers for every X10 kit already in the field. Skydio's claim is that "REV 2 propellers show an order of magnitude improvement over REV 1 propellers in high-stress/high-speed flight conditions." That is a durability claim in a specific flight regime, and it should not be read as a ten-times consumable cost figure.
Supply chain, sanctions and the FCC Covered List
This review originally carried a detailed timeline of Chinese sanctions against Skydio, an Unreliable Entity List designation, a 90-day suspension, and an FCC Covered List rulemaking covering foreign-made UAS and critical components. None of those dates, designations or rule details could be confirmed against a primary source during this pass, so all of them have been removed. If your procurement decision turns on export controls, battery supply, or Covered List eligibility, treat that as an open research item and get it from the Federal Register, the FCC and MOFCOM directly.
The favourable side is documented by the vendor. On 23 July 2026 Skydio announced that all current Skydio drone solutions were added to the Blue UAS Cleared List, including what it describes as the first and only Blue UAS-cleared DFR solution. On 24 April 2026 Skydio announced a commitment of $3.5 billion to expand US manufacturing.
How it compares
Cells below reflect procurement structure, which is durable. Vendor-specific safety records for rivals were outside the scope of this review, and country-of-origin regulatory status for DJI is deliberately left unstated here because it could not be verified in this pass.

The comparison worth internalising: Skydio's advantage over DJI is procurement eligibility. A demonstrated reliability edge is a separate claim, and nobody has published one.
Deployment reality
The volume is genuine, and the numbers here are vendor-published and unaudited. On 6 July 2026 Skydio announced "1 Year, 1,000 Skydio Docks Deployed, 4M+ Flights." On 13 August 2026 it reported more than 10,000 flights supporting public safety during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. On 10 June 2026 it announced the Vancouver Police Department launching Canada's first dock-based DFR programme.
This section previously carried US Army order values and unit counts, agency counts, per-department mission totals, and an account of a city council vote that killed a trial. None of that could be confirmed against a primary source in this pass, and all of it has been cut. Two of those claims (a specific Army contract value and a specific council vote tally with attributed quotes) were load-bearing enough that removing them leaves this section thin. It is thin because the sourcing was thin, and padding it back out with vendor marketing would be worse.
Who should buy it
Buy it if you are a federal or defence buyer needing Blue UAS Cleared, NDAA-compliant hardware at scale, where procurement eligibility dominates every other consideration and you have the fleet size to absorb a low-rate failure mode statistically. Buy it if you are a large agency running a multi-dock DFR programme, you have a written quote covering hardware, deployment and training, DFR software and dock maintenance for year one, and you have budget authority to expand cloud storage as the fleet grows.
Do not buy it if you are a small department pricing off the drone SKU. The dock economics will break your budget in year one. Do not buy it if your programme depends on flight over people with a parachute waiver, until you have read the April 2026 parachute bulletin and confirmed your firmware is past 43.147.79. Do not buy it if your battery connector shim status is unknown, until you have confirmed with Skydio which side of the September 2026 distribution window your airframes sit on. And do not buy it expecting an independent reliability benchmark to exist, because none does.
Verdict
The X10 is well positioned among Western public-safety drones by procurement status, and Skydio's public posture is expansionary rather than distressed: a stated $3.5 billion US manufacturing commitment in April 2026, and a full sweep onto the Blue UAS Cleared List in July 2026. Financial specifics beyond those announcements could not be verified here, so no funding, valuation, headcount or layoff claim is made.
The problem is disclosure asymmetry. Skydio does the honest thing in a place almost nobody reads, behind a 403, in a portal with no CVE programme to normalise its bulletins. A buyer reading the product page learns about 40-minute endurance and a 15,000 ft service ceiling. A buyer reading the Zendesk API learns that flight control can fail without warning at a published rate that is still open sixteen months after it was disclosed, that battery percentage was wrong on roughly one flight in 1,500 until November 2025, that a connector shim finishes distribution in September 2026, and that the defence variant's emissions-silence mode could crash the aircraft.
Buy the X10 with the second document open. Then budget the dock, not the drone.
